What is Speech and Language Therapy?

Speech and Language Therapy is a specialist healthcare service that supports adults experiencing difficulties with communication or swallowing (eating and drinking). 

Who We Work With (Conditions) 

Our adult Speech and Language Therapy service supports people whose difficulties may be associated with:

 

    • Acquired brain injury (e.g Stroke, Traumatic Brain Injury)
    • Progressive Neurological Conditions (e.g. Dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis)
    • Respiratory conditions (e.g COPD)
    • Other conditions affecting communication and/or swallowing

We can help with:

  • Motor speech disorders – problems affecting speech clarity such as:
    • Dysarthria (muscle weakness/slowness affecting speech)
    • Apraxia (difficulty planning of sequencing speech movements)

 

  • Language difficulties including:
    • Aphasia (difficulty understanding, word-finding difficulties, word errors)

 

  • Cognitive-communication difficulties, such as:
    • Difficulties with attention
    • Memory changes impacting on communication
    • Reduced problem-solving skills

 

  • Eating, drinking, and swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) such as:
    • Coughing, throat clearing, choking, when eating or drinking
    • Oral stage difficulties including holding food in the mouth, persistent chewing, losing food or drink from the lips

  • Advice and support for you, your family, and carers
